Federal University of Agriculture Zuru — Zuru, Kebbi State, Nigeria

Environmental Research Unit

Combating desertification, soil degradation, and climate change in the Sahel.

Ecological Resilience & Restoration

The Environmental Research Unit (ERU) at FUAZ is at the forefront of tackling the environmental challenges unique to Northwest Nigeria. Situated at the edge of the expanding Sahel, our mission is to develop restorative techniques that protect the ecosystem while supporting agricultural productivity.

Desertification Control

Researching sustainable afforestation protocols and the selection of drought-resistant tree species for shelterbelts.

Water Management

Developing efficient irrigation systems and rainwater harvesting techniques for small-holder farmers in dryland regions.

Soil Restoration

Investigating carbon sequestration and organic matter recovery in soils degraded by over-farming and erosion.

Strategic Initiative: The ERU is a key partner in the "Great Green Wall" initiative, providing technical expertise and nursery monitoring to ensure the survival of newly planted forest strips in Kebbi State.

Climate Data Analytics

The unit maintains a network of automated weather stations across the university farm. This data is used to model climate patterns, providing farmers with reliable "planting windows" and early warnings for extreme weather events.

Renewable Energy in Agriculture

A growing area of our research focuses on Agri-photovoltaics—the co-location of solar panels and crops—as a way to provide sustainable power for irrigation while potentially reducing soil evaporation through partial shading.
