Federal University of Agriculture Zuru — Zuru, Kebbi State, Nigeria

Animal Science Research Unit

Optimizing livestock genetics, ruminant nutrition, and sustainable dairy output.

Advancing Livestock Productivity

The Animal Science Research Unit at FUAZ is dedicated to solving the challenges of livestock production in the Sahelian region. Our research integrates traditional animal husbandry with modern molecular genetics and nutritional science.

FUAZ Cattle Herd & Ruminant Research

Indigenous Bovine Breeds, Dairy Herd & Pasture Grazing Research

Livestock Genomics

Utilizing artificial insemination and cross-breeding to develop heat-tolerant, high-milk-yielding bovine breeds.

Ruminant Nutrition

Developing low-cost, nutrient-dense feed formulations using local agricultural by-products and drought-resistant fodder.

Poultry Health

Researching vaccine delivery systems and bio-security protocols to combat Newcastle disease and Avian Influenza.

Ongoing Project: The unit is currently leading the "National Dairy Transformation Program," a 3-year study aimed at increasing the daily milk yield of indigenous 'Bunaji' cattle by 40% through specific nutritional interventions.

Facilities & Labs

The unit maintains a central Molecular Genetics Laboratory, an experimental dairy parlor, and a poultry research station. These facilities allow for controlled trials and data collection on animal growth, health, and metabolic processes.

Sustainable Pastoralism

A significant portion of our research focuses on the "Sedentarization of Pastoralists," identifying technical and social pathways to help traditional herders transition to settled, more efficient ranching systems that reduce resource conflicts.
